‍

‍

‍

Het gesprek is in het Engels.

Woorden Leven: MAQAM’s ongoing programme about the depth that words can offer, beyond the quick opinion.

‍

For more than 1,400 years, Muslims have been part of Europe’s history. Yet that history has largely disappeared from the books. What does it mean for how Europe sees itself when centuries of shared past are forgotten?

‍

In this edition of Woorden Leven we talk with Tharik Hussain, author, historian and travel writer. In his new book Muslim Europe he travels through Sicily, Malta, Portugal, Spain and Cyprus. He visits palaces built by Italian emirs, Muslim cities that had street lighting while London was still stuck in the mud, and philosophers who taught Europe what Aristotle had really said. He shows how Muslim Europe was a sanctuary for Jewish communities for centuries. And he asks why none of this was in his European history books.

‍

Tharik Hussain writes for The Times, The Guardian and National Geographic Traveler, and has made award-winning radio for the BBC. His previous book Minarets in the Mountains was longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize. He is a fellow at the Centre for Religion and Heritage at the University of Groningen.

‍

The conversation is led by Farid Boussaid, assistant professor of political science at the University of Amsterdam. Afterwards there is room for questions and responses from the audience.

‍

The conversation will be in English.
